Tips to travel eco friendly and find green tourism destinations
Related to country: Italy

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Planning Your Trip:

* Look for hotel accommodations and tours that carry environmental friendly certifications or memberships in green industry associations - such as Green Seal or Green Leaf.
* Select a hotel close to public transportation or near the places you are going to visit during your stay.
* When flying, book electronic tickets. It reduces paper waste and you are less likely to lose your ticket.

Top 10 Eco friendly destinations:

1. Buck Island Reef National Monument - St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
2. Sea Turtle Watching in Rekawa - Rekawa, Sri Lanka
3. Napo Wildlife Center - Quito, Ecuador
4. Artisans D’Angkor Silk Farm – Siem Reap, Cambodia
5. Celestun Biosphere Reserve – Yucatan, Mexico
6. Rainforest Hike to Middleham Falls & Ti Tou Gorge with Ken’s Hinterland Adventure Tours – Dominica
7. Vieques, Puerto Rico
8. Oslo, Norway
9. Boulder, Colorado
10. Italy - Tuscany bike tours

Before You Leave:

All transportation requires the combustion of fuel, so the greenest thing you can do is use public transport. When possible, take the train or bus instead of flying. If you're driving, try to get as many people in the car as possible, instead of taking multiple vehicles.

If you have to fly, book direct.

Stay "Local" at Your Destination:

Eco-travel companies are focused on both social and natural environment trips. They hire local workers, buy groceries from local farmers and markets, and collect art from their native neighbors. What’s more, eco-travel companies will usually put a percentage of their profits back into the community.

Bus and Rail:

Staying in the country, your region, state or even city can leave a far smaller footprint that stepping abroad ? the closer you stay to home, the fewer fossil fuels will be burned. Taking a trip within the United States opens up the option of taking a bus or even riding a train. A tour by train can be a vacation in itself, and is a fun way to enjoy the scenery and get off the main path.

Make your own food:

Buying locally produced food ingredients and cooking your meal at the hostel, your host's home or making sandwiches is both cheap and eco-friendly. A restaurant meal produces around 8kg of CO2 per diner and a home cooked meal around 400 grammes. Home cooked food generates 340kg of CO2 per person per year.

What to Take With You:

Travel-size packages might seem quick and convenient, but all that extra packaging takes a heavy toll on the environment. O'Neill recommends filling re-usable containers with the products you need instead of buying additional sundries.

Take a water bottle with you. It's difficult to find a recycling option when you're on the go. And besides, plastic does not biodegrade. If and whenever possible, take your re-usable version with you. Many models even have a handy carry strap too!

Travel light and take only what you need. This will make it easier to take public transportation and get around. Hopefully, there will even be room left over to bring home souvenirs, which are an important contribution to local economies.
